The Stone Spheres of Diquís are one of Costa Rica's most fascinating and enigmatic archaeological wonders. These ancient stone balls, which range in size from just a few centimeters to over two meters in diameter, were crafted by an unknown civilisation over a thousand years ago.

The spheres were first discovered in the early 20th century, when workers were clearing land for banana plantations in the Diquís Delta region of southern Costa Rica. Since then, over 300 spheres have been found, scattered throughout the region and even beyond.

The spheres were carved from a variety of rock types, including granite, gabbro, and limestone. Some are perfectly spherical, while others are irregular in shape. The precision of their craftsmanship and the sheer size of the larger spheres has led many to speculate about the purpose and origin of these mysterious artefacts.

One theory is that the spheres were used for astronomical purposes, with the larger ones serving as markers for celestial events. Others believe that they were used as part of religious or cultural rituals, or even as symbols of social status.

Despite years of study, the true purpose of the Stone Spheres of Diquís remains a mystery. But their significance is undeniable. In 2014, UNESCO recognised the spheres as a World Heritage Site, acknowledging their cultural and historical importance to Costa Rica and the world.

Visitors to the Diquís Delta region can see the spheres for themselves, scattered throughout the landscape or displayed in museums and archaeological excavation parks. The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum in San Jose, for example, features several stone spheres on display, along with other archaeological treasures from Costa Rica's ancient civilisations.

Whether you're a history buff, a curious traveler, or simply intrigued by the mysteries of the past, the Stone Spheres of Diquís are a fascinating and captivating destination in Costa Rica. So pack your sense of wonder, your camera, and your sense of mystery, and get ready to explore the enigma of these ancient stone balls. (Click the picture to see our video)
